I’d just made it over the ridge at Chatoqua peak when I had a call to help a mate get his last available unit ready. House Full on a sunday night! I suppose the Grampians is a destination free of the dreadful effects of the fires. I can only wish all those small businesses that are facing months, if not years, of reduced patronage all the very best and hope that the aid promised gets through to those who need it most.

Mostly spent the weekend taking notes on the West Indies prior to the outbreak of the American Revolution (still) and reading new book on the English Civil Wars. And fart-arseing around on LP. David Rubie came round Saturday afternoon and set up digital TV for me with a set top box.(Much appreciated, Dave.) After he left took me a little while to work out how to switch it on and off. Reception generally excellent, though occasional problems with channel 9. Think it had to do with truck motors running outside. (The pillock next door who has forced me to wear industrial ear-muffs to avoid his noise.)About to satart reading Pox Americana, about smallpox in America during the Revolution. Book on the civil war is a delight.
Still gloating over Qld election result. (Anybodsy but the RWDBs).

&^#$@ mutt dropped in the sit-stay again! Next trial this Saturday, help!

Got home, too tired to do anything. In an hour will start cooking a nice flathead.

Still reading “Snow Crash” neal must have spent a lot of time unearthing all those Sumerian etc myths!

    It rained here yesterday…..nearly.
We heard this sound on the roof and rushed out to the verandah just in time to see the last of it.
We have had no measurable rain here for over three months now.
There has been rain to the east of us, we have watched it, to the north, west and south.
    None here.
Dunno what I said about the sky fella but I wish I hadn’t.

Just knocked off from final mixing for my ‘other’ band’s debut EP.

David Rubie, if you’re reading, I’m sitting at home now running the unmastered mix through the Orban 622b parametric EQ you helped procure for me. It’s awesome. Subtle or aggressive, depending what you want. Should aid me in becoming a mastering engineer no end.

But tell your techie that stuff needs cleaning once in a while! The EQ and the mixer made fecking horrible noises every time a knob was twiddled, but a spray of contact cleaner in each pot and she’s good as new.

Oh, and I’m pickling octopus. Also awesome.

Went to the game. Sea Eagles flogged again. Woeful.

Well can you believe as a Victorian, today IM cutting wood with a chainsaw for the potbelly to keep me warm when winter hits? Yep we have all seasons here, just a matter of harmony I guess . Thanks to all guys and gals for you protection this summer.

It’s hard to tell a bloke who looked like 7 feet of pelican shit and of about the same cleanliness that his equipment was filthy. I asked him so many stupid questions I think he thinks I’m from special school. I told you I know nothing about pro audio gear – I just sort of assumed looking at most musicians that they kind of spread filth and like it that way :-)

I’m very glad that whole thing worked out in your favour FDB – nice to have a win sometimes.

Paul Burns – you aren’t missing much on channel nine but I think I have a better aerial that has a booster but doesn’t screw with the digital signals like the one you’ve got. I didn’t even get a chance to look properly at some of the wonderful old books Paul has stashed away up there having to hurry home.

I went out for my first criterium on Saturday on my newly rebuilt carbon fibre uber bike and got lapped twice. The B grade (lowest grade here) bunch was hitting 50km/h+ down the short straight of the circuit they use here and I’m about 6 months away from being able to do it more than once a day, let alone 10 times in a row. Kind of dispiriting but there you go – it was exciting and fun while I was able to keep up, very different from road racing but the golden rule (don’t get dropped from the bunch, due to the aerodynamic advantage of closely following another cyclist) seemed even more important.

Sunday morning walked the three girls downtown to watch the Armidale autumn festival bike races around the centre of town which they eventually bored of, although the middle daughter expressed some interest in having a go at it. I missed the A graders which was a bugger – up close even the lower grade crits are something to see, especially when the race finishes with a close sprint. Be interesting to see if bicycle racing takes off again like it did during the last depression.

Not so lazy. A bike race in the morning followed by a visit with the family to Camberwell Primary School fete with a very French theme, including escargots (they teach half their classes in French), followed by a great kitesurfing session.

  13. Robert Merkel

PeterC: which bike race? The SKCC crits?

I skipped them this week to ride up Mount Donna Buang, which was fine until a tree branch fell on me. No, I’m not kidding. Yes, I’m fine, modulo a bit of road rash…the full story can wait till Monday.

    DR @ 11,
came okay anyway. I’m not exactly sure where my place is in relation to the mountain and the hills (I did climb Mt. Duval once when I was younger)or whether it just changes with the weather or vehicle motors running outside my bedroom window or whatever. Leaving everything as you arranged it; ain’t touching anything in case I stuff it up. Will have to tell Homecare to be careful tomorrow arvo.Nice if you can find an aerial with a booster.
Loved Sunday night TV. Rogue Nation was even better this week, but with a madman like Wentworth and a bastard like Darling + a villainous convict wench like Mrs. New,etc., etc., you can’t miss can you? Loved the arse-bearing scene. So that’s where brown-eyes originated. Loved Poirot too. (Why is the TV series better than the books? As a very young yoof I went through an Agatha Christie stage. Think my parents thought she was safe to read.Along with P. G. Wodehouse.) But then I discovered Zola and was damned forever.

  15. Paul Burns

DR, check the books out next time. Will have more by then I hope. (I get at least one a fortnight.)

Had a birthday BBQ for the youngest, who turned 20 at 7.00am today. Of course I know what time it was, I was there.

Potato and cauliflower and green bean salads very popular. Recipes requested and given. Swollen head very smartly deflated by family. Woolies thick sausages also jane Says:

Mowed, got hot and sweaty and then bathed in the creek–absolute bliss and definitely no sharks. Finally finished Ilywhacker and started True Story of the Kelly Gang. Normally I’m a fast reader but for some reason the words of Peter Carey really slow me down. Illywhacker took bloomin’ ages to plough through. Not sure if its because he’s so very wordy or because some of his concepts are particularly unusual or just plain unbelievable. Two different books, but the author’s voice a constant and quite distinct. I read Oscar and Lucinda when I was living in Balmain and visiting Bellingen, so that was good, but after this current Carey book festival o’ mine, I think I’ve got the picture/had a lifetime’s fill of Mr Carey and his particular P.O.V.

Worked. Slept. Paid for Japanese railway pass to be used next month. Bought a couple of DVDs — an anime that began slowly, rapidly went surreal, bizarre and laugh-out-loud funny, then finished on a sad and bittersweet note; and the third series of Octopus. Worked some more, and slept some more. Got my tax refund — which will pay for the Japan trip and leave a fair bit of change — and got to make the 18th post in “Lazy Sunday”.

Who could ask for anything more?

  19. Friendless

We spent all day Saturday at the emergency section of the hospital as my fiancee had unidentified abdominal pains. After 11 hours of tests and waiting, the best guess is a pulled muscle. I took a break at dinner time to watch the election at home, and when I got back I was tempted to tell the hospital staff “hurry up or Anna’ll take another hospital off you!”. But the staff at RBH were very helpful and friendly all day. Hoping to do something different next weekend.

Robert, I raced at the SVCC (Southern Vets) crits at Casey Fields and got 3rd. Not quite enough legs for a long sprint finish, where I was overtaken by Mark “Roadblock” Thompson and Brad “Thumper” Daly.

Sorry to hear about your mishap and bad luck. Lot of trees on the Donna road but they don’t fall down that often . . . hope you weren’t doing 60 km/h when it happened!

  21. Robert Merkel

This was between Warburton and Milgrove – I’d done 90 km and the climb, and was about 2km away from the car.

Luckily, I only got hit by the fringes of the branch. Was still enough to knock me off the bike – was only doing about 35km/h. A bit of road rash and a sore back was the extent of it.

  22. David Rubie

Bike not damaged Robert? That’s one thing that worries me a bit now – the old steel bike you could probably hit with a whole tree and not damage it, but these new fangled carbon and alloy/carbon wonderbikes just seem so fragile.

  23. Robert Merkel

Dunno about the wonderbike. No obvious damage, but I’m having it checked by the bike shop just in case.

Be very peeved if it is damaged.

  24. Robert Merkel

BTW, Friendless, glad your fiancee is OK. Emergency departments are not fun places to be.
