Continuing an irregular series commenting on how the election looks to commercial tv viewers: commercial free to air is the biggest single source of information for voters.
I’m boycotting Channel Nine tonight, because I fear that the Mark Latham “controversy”/60 Minutes cross-promotion will “overshadow” everything else, given that the marauding cub reporter gate crashed Tony Abbott’s veterans affairs announcement at the Penrith RSL this morning. [Video here if you are interested.]
Channel Seven’s not giving all that much prominence to the campaign either, leading with the gaoling of a Brisbane cat killer, a cancer-stricken pensioner’s house burning down in Inala, and more wild weather in Queensland – “an icy burst of Southern air”. Yep, folks, the Ekka winds have come with a vengeance this year. And then we had the beached barge at the Gold Coast. And continuing the nautical theme, 17 sailor folk (“the mates”) have been rescued and are back in town safely.
So on a rather unseasonably cold Brisneytown night, for which we blame “Southern states”, we heard that Julia Gillard’s “message” on Broadband was overshadowed by Mark Latham. Even though Latho gate crashed Mr Rabbit’s event. Seven took a side swipe at Nine, and suggested that the veterans “told him where to go”.
Then we got Mr Rabbit “down with the people” at Rooty Hill and he “spoke their language”, swearing about his mortgage. The opposition leader was said to be “buoyed by his victory”, and Seven borrowed LP’s line about Latham being an equal opportunity pest.
Bob Hawke was wandering around, and Julia Gillard was kissed by shoppers in Perth.
And so it goes…

[ALP is 57.5]
Shhhh!!
When are you going to start calling him ‘Mr Rabid’? I can’t stand the suspense.
@2 – Hadn’t thought of that one!
Don’t count the chinkens yet, HD, its not over till the lady broad of beam sings.
Poor Kim.
My heart goes out to you, you have seen the desolation.
Inala, yes, was there as an air force kid in the fifties, my mother cursed the place for the cock roaches you could put saddles on (until we got dumped in Elzabeth SA, which is probably the same thing, I suppose).
So they are trying to get Latham to do what he did for labor, for the liberals.
Laughs; now bordering on the hysterical..
Definitely not counting chickens Paul, beware hubris and all that.
Its a rogue, but …..take off some % for rogue and some % for MoE and its still a good poll for the ALP and, apparently, the best Morgan result for the Greens ever at 15.5%.
A trend developing?
#6 God, I hope so!
@5 – hannah’s dad, it would be more appropriate to discuss the Morgan poll on the most recent Election Roundtable thread.
Sorry Kim.
In my defense [I reaching here I know] it is normally a news item on Channel 7, it was commissioned by them I think, but apparently they failed to mention it tonight.
No probs, hannah’s dad.
>When are you going to start calling him ‘Mr Rabid’? I can’t stand the suspense.
I know. I used to think LP was balanced.
@10 – Ralph, it’s a blog, a lefty blog. We’ve never sought to be balanced.
Having said that, I won’t be calling Abbott “Mr Rabid”.
Mark Latham reminds me of that other side of journalism relevant to small publications – the non-publishing or dead week in the case of a fortnightly suburban where you are sent out to heavy the wayward advertisers.
In the absence of a court sheriff – they cost too much – it was a case of confronting the errant advertiser in person and serving a ‘bluey’ for unpaid accounts. The larger and longer the unpaid account the heavier the confrontation.
Between elections I can see Mark easily making the rent as the Ch9 heavy if his on air stuff for 60 Minutes doesn’t rate. Or should that be Ch7 now, whatever, he’s a natural.
I’m just pleased you spell ‘gaoled’ the way you do. Warms my heart.

My mistake, Kim, apologies … appreciate your response.
To be honest, Ralph, it’s a joke more than anything else. The meme comes from a silly accusation that Julia Gillard was pronouncing Abbott’s name that way to trivialise him. In truth, it’s easy to run the r on when you say “Mr” followed by a surname beginning with a vowel. I just find it kinda funny, is all. Not meant to be a slur.
I like Mr. Rabbit. It makes Abbott look stupid. And I reckon Julia does call him Mr. Rabbit. I’ve listened closely since her appearance on Q & A when it was brought to people’s attention. Good on her.!
My house bunny Hector is unsure about being associated with Mr Rabbit
