    Frist!

Planted a few trees (native frangipani, Hymenosporum Flavum), very nice.

But there’s a certain futility about it doing that as, at the same time, Vicforests are busy ripping out the last remnants of old wet forest outside the National Parks.

Been hanging out for this thread to go up, having got out of my pyjamas this weekend.

I went to see Deb Taylor’s new print works exhibition New Ground (based on maps) at the Stephen McLaughlan Gallery in the Nicholas building (37 Swanston St). Thought about aerial view landscape traditions like Central Desert art and Fred Williams.
I joined the Open House activities and took teenagers to see the City Baths and the Mission to Seafarers. Loved showing the kids where I learnt to swim at the City Baths, and where we used to be able to dive from the balcony. Was annoyed to miss out on seeing the Mikvah bath. Blown away by the beautiful building at the MIssion to Seafarers, and also by their continuing work to support seafarers.
I watched local girls soccer games in lovely winter sunshine on the banks of the Merri Creek.
I did virtuous charity knitting for the Save the Children Fund Knit a Blanket campaign.

I visited a chic new cafe in Brunswick (one opens every week, so the cafe itself is not the news, so much as my getting there before the trendy young things fill it so much I can’t get in the door) and had superb hot chocolate, and got excited about new projects with a friend.

There was a beautiful rainbow last night, and glorious sunshine today.

Spent the week recuperating from a virus in a town without even one set of traffic lights and only one, rarely used, pedestrian crossing. The most stressful event has been designing fencing to keep the plague of bandicoots away from my mates fruit trees followed closely by watching three female satin bower birds devouring the strawberries. The local economy is in ruins so we’re planning on establishing something to bring in some crowds; I’m keen on Maussieworld which would be something like a Mecca Theme Park including the Fatwah Funhouse and Shariah Land. We could even have a daily Halal Killing Competition. Rules yet to be worked out.

Very lazy today, I see. Well, I posted the 3rd edition of The universally unconstitutional war on drugs.

(Contrary to some superficial reporting, the ruling that Florida’s drug law is unconstitutional isn’t about whether the accused must prove lack of knowledge. It’s about whether such knowledge matters at all. U.S. District Judge Mary S. Scriven found that it does. Pity she doesn’t know what a petard is.)

Just in time for Ramadan. :)

Golf this morning :( nuf said.
Just spent an hour and a half peeling surplus tomatoes for the freezer, a job I loathe. But on a happy note, not one tomato lost too pests this year.
These ” Rouge de Marmande ” fantastically resistant.

Recording for band #2 finally reached phase III today – synths and percussion.

    It was fun.

Partly because the bass player’s house where we set up has a fantastic rear extension that cops full winter sun, and today in Melbourne was glorious.

But mostly because I reacquainted myself with a couple of old fave synthesisers. Thank you Ms. SH-09, and thank you Mr. Juno-106. And may God bless the Roland Corporation.

Aren’t they though? Did I put you onto them Jumpy? I have a dim recollection…

    FDB.
I don’t think so , but if you did, thanks a bunch.
I do remember discussing Dipel with you though, magic stuff.

It was National Tree Day today. I didn’t plant any trees but I spent half my day picking mandarin trees and the other half pruning apricot trees. On a perfect 22 degree day. I think spring may come early this year.

In a vain attempt to wear out the takkers we went on a long walk/cycle to a park and to buy essentials, they are full of beans, I is wreaked.

Busy Saturday. Went with the family to rescue my father-in-law, who had locked himself out, then to a barbecue shop, then a long drive to the lighting shop where they sold me LED downlights which, they forgot to mention, are (a) a non-standard size and (b) have no replaceable parts: you throw the fixture away when the LEDs stop working. Money back without dramas. Sparky has installed LED downlights with user-replaceable LED bits. Then a visit to my mother-in-law, whose health is improving rapidly.

Failed to plant any tomatoes this weekend. Will be sowing Brandywines during the week, with any luck.

Spent most of the weekend writing about John Hunter’s 1776 Atlantic crossing. (Its only a few paragtaphs.) Also dipping into a book on the Saratoga campaign, 1777.
    Had a visitor Saturday afternoon.
Ate lots of chocolate biscuits, drank some wine, smoked too many cidarettes.
really like the mew Barnaby on ABC TV.

  13. akn

Agreed Paul Burns that the new Barnaby has breathed fresh air and an element of surrealism into Midsomer sociopathology.

FDB, given that we are fellow-Melburnians, what tomato varieties apart from Rouge de Marmande do you recommend?
