I’ve had a brief weekend on the Bellerine Peninsula: beautiful day yesterday, splendid meal last night at Barwon Heads looking across the estuary to the ocean. Then this morning to the Sunday market (this week at Point Lonsdale) and achieved a magnificent haul of herb and vegetable seedlings plus some really pretty old-fashioned geraniums.

A light lunch at Queenscliff, bought some of the fantastic chutneys and pickles produced by Rural Australians for Refugees, then dropped my hostess-friend back at Ocean Grove and home to Melbourne just before the rain started.

Amazing how even 27 hours away from the city can make such a difference to my sense of well-being.

Do it for life Fiona, instead of just a weekend. Break through the metropolitan curtain & discover just how much well being life has to offer! :-)

Developed some actual film for the first time in 10 years. Smell of the chemicals took me back. Results were pretty good.

Lots of music last night in honour of Uncle Seamus’ fleeting visitation, and this afternoon, a lazy entertaining Bobby McFerrin festival.

This one demonstrates the universality er… on earth amongst humans of the pentatonic scale.

    Gonna get in my car,
    Drive away,
    Drive so far
    No one’s gonna find me
    My foot on the gas,
    Accelerate, Drive so fast
    No one’s gonna catch me.

We found a wounded wedgetail eagle resting beneath a tree beside the track just before sunrise. The other bloke on the train — a sprightly 61-year-old — contemplated us stopping to rescue the bird.

“I’d have to take off my clothes,” he said, “and throw them over the bird and then we’d have to figure out a way of lifting it up to the loco.”

I said that I’d stay in the loco with my camera, to get evidence for the injury claim after he’d done an early-morning naked wrestle with an angry and almost-fully grown eagle.

Wisdom prevailed, and we made a couple of phone calls to arrange for the RSPCA to send someone out to collect the rather daunting-looking bird.

The RSPCA person couldn’t find it, we later learnt.

    The bird had flown?

But it came back, and a traincrew this afternoon called the RSPCA again, and the bird was successfuly retrieved.

Oh noes, I agree with SATP. :D City is still a good place to visit though.

  7. Ootz

Oh noes, have to agree with SATP too!

It was my favourite Librarian’s Birthday wish to spend the weekend in the Big Smoke doing the Kultcha thing and stay overnight. Friday night was planned for opening of the first screening this years Sydney Travelling Film Festival. ‘The Hunter’ was totally booked out, because of Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton were there to introduce the movie and celebrating 25 years as film critics. Went to the Rondo Theatre instead and were thoroughly entertained by a crackling local production of Ben Eltons ‘Popcorn’. Not sure who adapted the book but it did capture the current Zeitgeist rather well, such as 99% vs 1%, bogan-porn/blood&guts in msm.

However, glad to be back on the country again. The madness of the traffic and the endless procession of the human zoo can be a bit taxing. Spend today down on a sandbank in the creek reading and dreaming.

Terangeree, that bird does not look wounded!

I went to a gig on Friday night: Northern European music night at Unit, Daikanyama, featuring Reptile and Retard (Denmark), Casio Kids (Norway), Feldman (Iceland) and LMCDF (Finland – all girl band). It was great. So much energy and everyone really happy to be there.

Last night I went to a thanksgiving dinner held by some Americans (all of whom were weirdos) and experienced my first ever Thanksgiving food. I have to say, it’s better than christmas dinner. Today was spent recovering from exhausting nights, and I’m watching Big Bang Theory, which is excellent.

  9. sg

oh I see! The LP hivemind hates Northern European music. Why else would I be in moderation?

  10. su

Let me guess: was it Our Town?

  11. su

Ooh, dyslexic brain — I read that comment 3 times and saw “Northern Exposure” every time. Lucky 4th and the synapses align. Never mind.

  12. sg

contra the lot of youze, I’m loving the big smoke. Tokyo is so much fun!

  13. sg

what would a Northern Exposure music night be like?

My Sunday was anything but lazy. I’ve finally got my tractor working, so my oldest son and I went up to mow the weeds at the Doomstead. Fortunately, he can’t drive the tractor, so he got to go around the fence with the whippersnipper …

Good day, though. Half the fences and three quarters of the paddock is done. I should be able to finish it off next weekend.

@13 well see, the town vs country discussion primed the synapses to jump a particular way and Our Town from Northern Exposure fits the theme. Also the lateness of the hour and the intercession of St Marlborough of the Awatere and her libations and the fact that I am half-listening to the second sitting of Marriage of Figaro and wishing I turn down the tremolo and a bunch of other excuses.

Sunday offered a pleasently casual morning.

I came in from feeding our three chinese chickens and was telling my wife that one of the hens has decided that I must be a rooster and assumes the “take me now” position when ever I get near. My just teen daughter, making tea, overheard this and expressed with a howl of horror the usual disdain at the mention of anything sexual.

She had drifted off to the other end of the house when I noticed that there was no tea for me. “Hey, where’s my cup?”, I called, to which the reply was

“If you want a cup of tea get your chicken misstress to make it for you!!”

They’re just too clever by half these kids.

Although it wasn’t on Sunday, I would like to comment on Mementos Cafe at Blackheath. Hubby and I were in Blackheath on Saturday to look at a children’s book fare and stumbled across this place.

Run by a German fellow named Gerhard, it was one of those places that wore its sustainable/Green credentials on its figurative sleeve. The blurb on the back of the menu read like something that would make Akers or the Blot choke on their grilled eggplant — recycling of waste, reneable energy, recycled paper for the bumpf, greywater, award wages, donations to Greenpeace, Amnesty, PETA etc. We were only there for lattes, (what else?) but had a very nice meal indeed, served promptly in the garden on a stone table.

Despite the obvious synchronicity between the cafe’s ethos and ours, we did manage a wry smile at finding oruselves in the extras pool for a mockumentary about green folk. It’s just a pity there was no chardonnay.

    They have a website:

    http://www.cafememento.com

Disclosure: I have no direct or indirect financial interest in the business, nor had I, to the best of my knowledge, been acquainted with any person who had such an interest, prior to Saturday.

LOL, BilB, they reckon we’re gross.

@Link: The Cast Iron Balcony has now moved to http://www.castironbalcony.com. Tigtog is mein new webhost and deserves great props, kudos and a large Mojito for her sterling work in moving the blog across to its new home.

The malware warnings were probably nothing much but could not be addressed as we could not get access to the server at Media2. Now I’m able to address such problems should they arise again.

Spent part of my lazy Sunday tweaking the new blog home with TT, then went to the Union to play the 5-7 shift, which is my favourite shift because then we spend most of our earnings on the Union’s fabulous food. Win-win for everyone. Bandmates are just back from a holiday in Europe so they had lots of interesting stories to tell.

Does (the inaugural) City2Sea count as lazy? (We won’t talk about results.)
