well I have just spent time in the bush listening to the wireless. The ubiquitous macquarie radio is full of ignorant angry commentators and the ABC encourages the listener to leave comments on their Facebook page after highlighting the dangers of Facebook’s disregard for privacy, and if I am relying on the wireless I am outside computer range. This is interspersed with ads for Bill Swampy Marshe’s history of the CWA. What, no women historians available to write a hagiography?
Got to hand it to Bush Telegraph devoting a hour to snakes the day before we caught a brown snake in the shed and saw a large snake slithering into the shade house.
Completed Murcutt inspired chicken shed made from recycled materials from the Wollibuddha tip. Total cost of the shed is $8. Wyandottes installed and have been moved back and forth between the shed and a tractor. Much time spent keeping the large blue-heeler-coolie cross from basting them with his saliva. A bright morning shredded when the usual thunderstorm rolled in across Barrington.
Thereafter I’ve been reading anew and re-reading Chantal Mouffe on strategies for democracy:
Sweet rain falling the last two days, repleneshed the depleted water tanks on which we rely.
With soil moistened, took the opportunity to dig out and plant suckers of a particularly sweet variety of sugar banana.
Missus made a chilli sauce from our own chillies, with ginger, garlic and onions: very hot, can only take in small quantities, should last us a while.
More rain coming.

Keep it quiet or we’re all in trouble

Spent the weekend with The Brother at Mirboo North. I’d finally got my bike back into riding condition after an 8 month or so hiatus. I tried the Mirboo North-Boolarra Rail trail for the first time by bike. Legs are fine, but the bum is definitely out of shape. Oh, the pain. Too out of shape to do the whole way and back again. I rode to one of the bridges and back to Mirboo, then did the same thing today from Boolarra.
As it’s mostly uphill from Boolarra to Mirboo North, and MN is a better place to eat, I’d recommend parking at Boolarra and riding to Mirboo for lunch, then cruising back to Boolarra.
The bridges have been replaced, but oy. This is a tourist attraction, no? I realise it’s impossible to replace the original bridges, but did they have to put in the most butt ugly concrete monstrosities they could possibly choose? They’re terrible, aesthetically.
Went to nearby Mount Worth this afternoon on the way back, just to learn the way, basically, as I didn’t have time for a proper walk. It’s beautiful.
In a bed i prepared 8 weeks ago I planted my roma tomato and french beans seedlings, and transplanted some basil to join em.
Eventually planted the borage seedlings with the strawberries , some purple bell peppers on their own, and some jap pumpkin on an old burnt out stump.
I know my planting timing is wrong, but the rains timing was spot on.
Pitter patter as we speak.
Shocked walker in weather that started nice from Mosman Bay up to Military Rd Mosman, but turned wet and cold (oh well…).
Shocked at the number of empty shops in this premium retail rent strip. Shocked at the cheapness of the bargain racks (who ever heard of ten dollar specials in designer shops in Mossie).
Interesting – One well known brand has downsized from the flashy larger corner position where it has been for absolutely years to a much smaller shop down the road. An entire two story complex with escalator is emptied completely and boarded up.
However, like great economic dung beetles – the designer clearance merchants have moved in under temporary rent conditions selling some pretty expensive (in normal times) brands from elsewhere… for $5 a piece with no eftpos facility.
Now who is going to cross the road to Carla Zampatti after that… and pay $300 for a single item when this sort of bargain buying is possible?
The regular retail renters cant be too happy.
One designer shoe shop discounted one week, further discounts the next, and the next and then resorting to SMSing customers past with “if you show this sms you will get another $40 off” on top.
Probably wont be there in a few weeks unless the landlords can provide relief.
Who would have thunk it in Mosman? Where has the money gone?
I went clubbing in daikanyama last night. I’m going to a wedding in snowy Hokkaido next week, so I went and bought a suit yesterday and collected it today (what a boring task!) My last suit was a fine, fine job but since 2005 I have put on just enough weight to no longer fit it. This is not very good at all. But still, getting a new three piece suit, a warm winter coat to go with it, belt and tie seems like a good deal for $700 or so.
Now I’m going to spend the evening watching Big Bang Theory and being exhausted.
I never have a lazy Sunday. I spent the day nose down in Livy.
helen, Mt Worth has some very nice walks – no big ones though, just some fern glades, a few kilometres. [stoushbait redacted - take it to the open thread]
I love Mirboo north, just for the brewery.
akn, you still have a tip you can scrounge from? I thought they’d all been converted into transfer stations and the like, no scrounging allowed. Our collie herds our chooks around the garden.

wilful: the tip is the main enterprise in town. It runs as a recycle centre and charges way too much for disposal however one can purchase from the staff. The manager of the tip is one of the few people in town who doesn’t drive a Holden Rodeo preferring instead a recent model Merc. It’s in the magical realist nature of Woollibuddha that you only have to imagine what you need and it becomes available at the next visit to the tip.
Some ad for a home air “freshener” — airwick I think, advertises itself as being able to “detect” when some artifical fragrance needs to be released. It’s called odour detect but I heard it as eau de detect ….
How perverse …

Arrived at Devonport on Sunday morning, disembarked and checked in at the Edgewater Hotel where I had breakfast, then went for a walk from East Devonport to the western head of the Mersey River, before having lunch in Devonport and catching a cab back to the hotel, where I watched some TV, did some reading and ate a room service dinner before hitting the sack early for a much-needed sleep.
Folks, please remember that Lazy Sunday is supposed to be non-political, a place where we just do a bit of chit-chat. Do we need to start adding a stoush-free zone tag, or do you think you might remember in future?
apologies tigtog.
About bloody time teh Left recognised the very fine qualities of Mirboo North, Boolarra and Mount Worth.
Disgusted, Gippsland.
Spent all of the weekend in bed witg a stomach bug which has now left me. Watched all of the ALP Conference. . Gillard made me reach for the mute button on the remote a lot. Will say no more re that, as I don’t want to provide stoush bait.
Am very soon getting a agnifying glass that magnifies 8 times. So will be able to see the cutsor and participate more.
Weathewr here has been unsuitable for being on line for days given my paranoia abouyt thunderstorms and computers. And my new ADSL connection is maddeningly slow.
Am in good health.
See youse soon.
Good to hear that your health is improving, PB.
