If you haven’t already done so and you have some free time this weekend, do yourself a favour and check this one out.
John Oliver of the Daily Show in the USA took a look at gun control legislation after the Senate had voted down proposals to expand background checks for gun buyers after the Newtown school massacre. Oliver began by interviewing Philip van Cleave of the Virginia Citizens Defence League.
Oliver’s investigations took him to Australia, which van Cleave seemed to think was on another planet (“… in the real world with human beings it’s not going to work…”, where he interviewed John Howard, Rob Borbidge, Tim Fischer and sundry citizens on the beach living under the tyranny of our oppressive gun laws, plus others.
Here’s Oliver’s look of horror and disbelief when Borbidge was telling him that he supported restrictive gun laws as a politician because it was the right thing to do and in the best interests of citizens:
Oliver’s turns the logic of the gun advocates and the lily-livered politicians quite beautifully back on themselves. Any way I thought it was a knockout, although I would have left some of the walkabout scene on the cutting room floor.
People are indeed the problem.
I don’t normally take much notice of the Emmy Awards but I did hear that these programs were nominated.
