Well we haven’t condemned since, well, forevah, so it must be long past time again to condemn. Here’s a 37th open condemnation thread. What’s getting up your goat? Which evil political, cultural, social, musical, religious, and other phenomena need condemnation? (Or loud denunciation?)
You can condemn anything you like except The Michael Garrick Sextet. I do condemn myself for not blogging for ages!
It’s been absolutely ages since I saw any live music. I’d planned to remedy that tonight by going to see Way Out West – a jazz act influenced by African and Vietnamese music at Jazzworx at Bowen Hills – but unfortunately I’ve got a virus. But this post is both promo for Way Out West and an open thread where folks can give me some vicarious enjoyment by recommending or reporting on any fab gigs attended recently!
Aside from the LP drinks across the length and breadth of the eastern seaboard (well, that may be a slight exaggeration…) summer is here, work is supposedly winding down (though I haven’t noticed) and it’s time to … party! It might be a good time to have an open party experiences thread – share tales of doom from work functions, report on exciting gigs, tell us about your fancy dress themed events, etc, ad infinitum!
I’m not really one for parties as such (if defined as a stack of people crammed into a kitchen and on a verandah or drinks with colleagues at a dreary suit bar) but I have been going to more gigs recently… last night Mr Mark and I caught The View From Madeleine’s Couch at The Press Club. Great OzBrazilian jazz, and I can recommend gin, lime and soda for those sultry and humid Brisbanian summer nights!
Well it’s been a fortnight so it must be time again to condemn. Here’s a 30th open condemnation thread. What’s getting up your goat this week so far? Which evil political, cultural, social, musical, religious and other phenomena need condemnation? (Or loud denunciation?)
You can condemn anything you like except Hope Waits. Well, actually, maybe you can’t condemn Tom Waits either.
I’ve just discovered a new artist – Melody Gardot, an American jazz singer. For anyone interested in music and disability, her story is really interesting.
The Valley Jazz Festival started on Tuesday night, back this year bigger and better with an infusion of promo and artist dosh from some dedicated fund raising from the folks at Jazz Queensland. I haven’t been down the road to see any of the gigs yet, due to a combination of the end of a lingering virus and the school night issue. But, swearing to stick to soda, lime and bitters, I can’t resist venturing to The Press Club tonight to hear Megan Washington sing. She’s just about the best jazz vocalist I’ve come across for quite some time, and having recently decamped to Melbourne, opportunities to see her in Brisvegas are now much rarer than I’d like. Check out some samples on her myspace and read a review of a previous gig by Kim from the LP archives. There’s an absolute plethora of good things going on through til Sunday, and I’m sure I’ll be checking some more out on the weekend (when perhaps a smidgeon of vodka might be added to my glass!)…
Ps: Melbourne readers might like to know that Megan is playing Bennetts Lane on the 18th of May, 1st of June and 22nd of June before she heads off to Tokyo.
