Former Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull spoke in the House of Representatives today, in debate on the reintroduced CPRS bills. Bernard Keane has a full wrap at The Stump. From Keane’s coverage, it appears that Turnbull devoted most of his time to demolishing Tony Abbott’s plan:
Turnbull tore apart the proposed plan as economically inefficient, environmentally ineffective and unable to meet the task of reducing Australia’s emissions by 5% by 2020.
Update: Peter Martin reproduces the text of Turnbull’s speech.
Matthew Knott at Crikey’s climate change blog, Rooted, will be live blogging Kevin Rudd’s Copenhagen speech from 8pm AEST. Go here to read.
I noticed a comment on Facebook that Obama’s speech at Cairo University to the Islamic world isn’t yet posted on the White House website. I checked and at the time of writing, it isn’t. But it’s up on Al Jazeera – full text here. I’m not sure if it’s a transcript released to the press or a transcription.
Somehow I can’t imagine George W. Bush saying this:
The Holy Quran tells us, “O mankind! We have created you male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another.” The Talmud tells us: “The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace.”
The Holy Bible tells us, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” The people of the world can live together in peace. We know that is God’s vision. Now, that must be our work here on Earth.
Folks might recall some discussion about the law of defamation when the spurious photos alleged wrongly to be of Pauline Hanson were published during the Queensland election campaign. As promised, Legal Eagle and Skepticlawyer have put together a guide to defamation law at their blog. It’s pertinent for all bloggers and everyone who comments on blogs, particularly for those who are in the habit of making malicious inferences about people’s motives and characters. There’s far too much of that around, and I’m rather surprised that we haven’t seen litigation abound in the blogosphere. That might be because of the sort of ethos that existed about speech in the years in which it developed, but that ethos and blogging have both changed, and it’s well worth understanding the degree to which any sort of online publication is governed by defamation law.
Michael Molitor gave a public lecture last night at UNSW, where he now holds an adjunct professorship with the Climate Change Research Centre between appointments as a ‘Carbon Manager’ for PriceWaterhouseCooper. The talk was entitled Climate Change: ‘Show Me The Money’, which is the famous line from Tom Cruise’s character in Jerry Maguire – so when Molitor spoke passionately of the ‘Governor of NSW’, I was thankful that there were no couches onstage. Though, to be fair, the event showcased a fascinating, eclectic and sometimes contradictory mix of bravado-filled insights on the problem of climate change from someone on the inner circle of business elites. The message was familiar enough – that we aren’t moving quickly enough for the scale of the problem – his analysis, however, was somewhat less conventional.
The ‘good news’ began with the observation that our ‘carbon productivity’, that is, our economic outputs from machines relative to their spewing waste into the global carbon dump has actually been increasing over time. Continue reading ‘Molitor@UNSW’
