Tony Abbott

Miles to go before he sleeps

By Kim on August 19, 2010

… though although I’m nodding to Robert Frost’s famous poem, read at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, I don’t think Mr Abbott is going without sleep because he has promises to keep: on his own admission, we have leave to doubt [...]

Quick link: Jacobs on Teach Next and Teach for Australia

By Mark Bahnisch on August 19, 2010

One of Julia Gillard’s lines about Tony Abbott’s cuts is that the Opposition, if elected, would abolish the Teach Next and Teach for Australia programmes. Yet, whether these two interlinked initiatives are in fact a good thing has not been [...]

Guest post by Pavlov’s Cat: The brain, she do the work for you

By Guest Poster on August 19, 2010

Cross-posted from Still Life With Cat. One has been trying in these dark pre-election days to stay a bit cheerful and upbeat and not to visualise what the phrase ‘Prime Minister Tony Abbott’ might mean for oneself, one’s loved ones, [...]

Guest post by Pavlov’s Cat: Presumably Jesus wants them for sunbeams instead

By Guest Poster on August 19, 2010

Cross-posted from Still Life With Cat. One of the things that occurred to me very forcefully several times during the nightmare morning I spent a few years ago in the Assemblies of God stronghold in the Adelaide suburb of (wait [...]

The Brisbane “town hall” meeting

By Kim on August 18, 2010

The no doubt over-hyped “town hall meeting” at the Broncos Leagues Club at 6pm, featuring Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott and 200 “swinging voters” picked by Galaxy will be televised live by ABC News 24 this time; and the online stream [...]

When he’s not channelling Peter Costello, Tony Abbott channels Noel Pearson

By Kim on August 18, 2010

One of the strange things about watching Tony Abbott on Q&A the other night is that he doesn’t actually appear to be a quick thinker. Any sort of question sees him raise his eyes to heaven in search of inspiration. [...]

Coalition claims to have economic policy

By Kim on August 18, 2010

Apparently, there’s more to it than reciting “debt and deficit” like a mantra. Yesterday, in his address to the National Press Club, when he could wean himself off talking about talking to “real Australians” at Rooty Hill and similar places, [...]

Tony Abbott on climate change

By Kim on August 17, 2010

Remember when Nick Minchin started frothing at the mouth on Four Corners over the left wing conspiracy that is climate science? At the time the Coalition’s official position was to negotiate amendments with the Labor Party on the ETS, and [...]

Tony Abbott on Q&A

By Kim on August 16, 2010

Tony Abbott will be appearing on Q&A in a few minutes. Please use the comments thread to, well, comment on his performance. As usual, there’ll be lots of Twitter action, under the hashtag #qanda. NB: Discussion of Julia Gillard’s appearance [...]

Let Tony Be Tony (Boatphone edition)

By Kim on August 15, 2010

Fresh from telling Barrie Cassidy this morning that the NBN’s favoured technology – “high fibre” – wasn’t the only way to deliver those intertubes, Mr Rabbit, according to Annabel Crabb on Twitter, is set to announce that he will have [...]

One more week and it’s all over bar the counting

By Mark Bahnisch on August 14, 2010

A week from now, we’ll be getting the earliest booth figures in from the count in Election Night 2010.

I’m starting to think it’s all over bar the shouting. The Prime Minister’s increasingly relaxed and confident style is central to Labor’s recovery.

Tony Abbott’s campaign has looked strangely static since his campaign launch. It’s not clear where the Opposition Leader goes from here, and the ALP will be hoping for a momentum boost near the finishing line from Monday’s launch.
