Lazy Sunday! (post Christmas edition)

Since we don’t live by politix alone (I sincerely hope), what did people get up to this weekend? And indeed since Christmas Eve? Join in, share some tales, regulars and lurkers all!

The New Farm festivities kicked off with a deeply spiritual mood before Midnight Mass (Italian style, described here) @ Casa Bahnisch. Surrounded by angelic presences we were! You can see the Holy Spirit church steps where we enjoyed pannetone and sparkling wine here at flickr.

I won’t add my condemn to your condemn XXXI (Christmas edition)

Well it’s the night before the night before the night before Christmas so it must be time again to condemn. Here’s a 31st open condemnation thread. What’s getting up your goat this week so far? Which evil political, cultural, social, musical, religious and *festively seasonal* and other phenomena need condemnation? (Or loud denunciation?)

You can condemn anything you like except 1944 recordings of Frank Sinatra singing Christmas tunes. Well, actually…

John Hewson discovers excitable punctuation, anti-political fantasies and other stuff to do with the end of political year 2008

End of year reflection on the state of politics and the nation type articles can be interesting. They can be tedious rehashes of trivia and reinventions of an already distorted reality to prove punditarian narratives r us and are ace (read any column in the Opposition Organ for an example). They can be quite thoughtful and rise above the usual trivia and actually say something. Or they can be quite weird.

John Hewson’s contribution in today’s Fin falls into the latter category. I strongly suspect his article is the first time evah a columnist in the venerable biz organ has written the sentence: “Whatever!” – indeed, Dr JoHew has been rather exuberant with his punctuation for emphasis in what is a sustained attack on the Reserve Bank. He may have a point that Glenn Stevens indicating that he’ll be taking a rest over January isn’t the best idea – as he points out, the Fed has rates heading down to a range between 0% and 0.25% and UK rates are at 2%. Perhaps Stevens thinks that in the month or so of the Great Australian Stupor, we’ll all spend the economy back to health by splurging on alcopops and sunscreen. On the other hand, Hewson is probably right that Aussie parochialism can’t be afforded anymore – the rest of the world may not understand that we’re all at the beach.

But Hewson’s paradox is that his solution is typical of what got us here in the first place – better “governance” and a more “independent” board – which sits uneasily with his own complaint that no one is allowed to complain about the independent Bank. This is the sort of neoliberal managerialist fantasy that landed us in this mess (in part) and the proscription is even more technocratic wonkery!

Speaking of which, that takes me to my segue about Kevin Rudd, political reality, climate change and technocratic wonkery.

Open Christmas season atrocities thread

You know we need one. Awful Carols etc. And I think the Brisbane City Council may have just gone a tad over the top with the bus decorations. I assume it’s the all Liberal (or is that LNP?) Campbell Newman council majority. Not wanting to be accused of grinchiness (given how awful they’ve been since Campbell got hold of a floor majority) and/or to fend off teh evil political correctness. But I think my fellow public transported citizens also felt this was more than a bit overdoing it…

Lazy Sunday! (and LP Christmas drinks reminder!)

Since we don’t live by politix alone (I sincerely hope), what did people get up to this weekend? Join in, share some tales, regulars and lurkers all!

On Friday night, I met some friends for a cocktail @ The Bowery (and I recommend a Southside as a good summer drink…) before sauntering down to the always excellent Jugglers Art Space on Brunswick Street for their last opening of the year – The X Show – a compendium of some of their most popular artists of 2008. Jugglers is an excellent space – with the beer garden like space at the back surrounded by graffiti covered walls being a much more pleasant venue for a drink (and the wines were $4.50 a glass) than in some smaller and more conventional galleries. I also particularly enjoyed Abigael Whittaker’s artwork, and I’m looking forward to her solo exhibition next year. We then retired to Pho Kim Lan on the Chinatown mall for a vego feast and a few bottles of white from the bottlo at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow which has unaccountably gone minimalist in terms of selection. Perhaps they’re concentrating on shovelling out beer and alcopops to the partying masses. But a thoroughly enjoyable dinner with very pleasant company!

Today, of course, is the LP Christmas Drinks in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney – so I shall see some of you there and let me raise a metaphorical glass in festive spirit to all LPers everywhere! No doubt there’ll be a separate thread or threads on the drinks at a later point. Details of venues, etc, are here.

Lazy Sunday! (Sunshine Coast wineries road trip edition)

I know I said I was taking a break from blogging ‘n’ all (and I still am!), but this is such a nice feature, and no one else seems to have put it up, and I’m in such a happy mood, so… Since we don’t live by politix alone (I sincerely hope), what did people get up to this weekend? Join in, share some tales, regulars and lurkers all!

Bet you didn’t know the Sunshine Coast has wineries – to visit same I went on a road trip today! Anti-Labor neck of the woods up there though – the “Don’t Risk Rudd” billboards are still up on the Bruce Highway (I hope the owners of the advertising space have an efficient billing system which is sending the Nats an accounts receivable notice as we speak…) and the local rag had a pic of Anna Bligh on the front cover which couldn’t have been more unflattering and tons of Tory propaganda inside… you can see why it was the sole bit of the state that swung against Labor in last year’s Queensland election… but still – nice part of the world. Rainforest, beaches, Big Pineapple and all that.

Happy Christmas if I don’t see you round the traps beforehand! Love youse all!

What does an atheist do for Christmas?

Christmas time can have a tendency in the US to highlight the cultural battle grounds of religious belief. Commonly there is the pathetic sight of the powerful and privileged indulging their persecution complex by claiming there is a “war on Christmas. Amusingly we see escalating battles of Christmas displays with atheists and Christian groups trying to outdo each other with some form of public display. It almost seems that the idea of “separation of church and state inflames religious fervour rather than being a happy point of demarcation.
But for the godless heathens who are not religious, are they freeloading on a religious festival by taking the benefits of a divinely inspired holiday?

The great climate change alarmist

Uncle Rupert talks the talk…..

Imagine if we succeed in inspiring our audiences to reduce their own impacts on climate change by just 1 per cent. That would be like turning the state of California off for almost two months. And imagine if we were able to take on the carbon footprint of our audience in Asia.

There are limits to how far we can push this issue in our content. Not every hero on television can drive a hybrid car. Oftentimes it just won’t fit. We must avoid preaching. And there has to be substance behind the glitz. But if we are genuine, we can change the way the public thinks about these issues.

Now there will always be journalists, including some of ours, who are sceptical, which is natural and healthy. But the debate is shifting from whether climate change is really happening to how to solve it. And when so many of the solutions make sense for us as a business, it is clear that we should take action, not only as a matter of public responsibility but because we stand to benefit.

Yeah, this is a done deal.

Christmas wars in hiatus, check back in 2007

We noticed here at LP that the Xmas Wars were pretty tame this year. But, don’t worry, according to the LA Times, they’ll be back!

Just checking in

… to say I hope everyone survived and even enjoyed the Christmas festivities. I’m not planning to resume regular blogging til after new year, so I thought I’d also wish all our fabulous LP readers all the absolute best for 2007!

For your last minute steel guitar David Bowie cover needs…

I’m almost ashamed to admit, given the mad incitements and enticements to buy buy buy and thereby send kid(s) from Guangzhou to uni from “Caroline Overington Blog”, that a large part of my week has been focussed on the ever elusive search for the perfect Christmas presents for friends and family. But, if like me, (and Pavlov’s Cat), you’ve noticed that alt.country circa 2006 includes a compulsory cover of a David Bowie song, and you’ve been searching for that hard to find steel guitar cover of Modern Love, you can’t go past The Last Town Chorus

I won’t add my condemn to your condemn (Christmas edition)

I’ve just been out doing some Christmas shopping and I wish to condemn Christmas carols muzak. I also condemn the culture warriors for dropping the ball on the “War on Christmas” front. Rarely has a festive season gone by in recent years with fewer beatups on TEH EVILS OF MULTICULTURAL GRIMPS.

Anyway, time again to condemn. So here’s a fourth open condemnation thread. What’s getting up your goat this week? Which evil political, cultural, social and religious phenomena need condemnation? You can condemn anything you like except the Vespers of the Third Sunday of Advent (over the fold).

Your Christmas singing and dancing productivity challenge…

…is over at Jo Jacobs’ place.

Evidently the silly season has arrived. Jo and I did something clearly unseasonable yesterday and actually had a business meeting. Few others around working. But we did have cointreau ice cream.

So – in short, any boss who sacks anyone for taking Jo up on her challenge is a mug!
