This Looks Like A Job For Jamie Oliver, USN

From the Sydney Morning Herald, a story which morbidly recalls Jamie Oliver’s recent ‘School Dinners’ series:

Several hundred recipes prepared for the inmates at the camp [Guantanamo Bay] are to be published next month in The Gitmo Cookbook, including such dishes as mustard and dill-baked fish and honey and ginger chicken breast.
The recipes were developed by the US Navy cooks who are in charge of the camp’s kitchens…
The chance to eat the Gitmo way is being offered by a group of American conservative activists who believe that the camp’s reputation for inhumane conditions and torture is exaggerated.
Laura Curtis, one of the book’s editors, said that the recipes would “make a point about how well we are treating these people”. Freed prisoners are said to have put on an average of six kilograms during captivity.
Having tested the recipes, she said, one member of the cookery book team took exception to the glazed carrots. “But she said that they did not sink to the level of torture.”

You just can’t make this stuff up. Presumably all of this fine dining will come to the detainees much as they are being held there—without charge.

Jon Stewart dealt with this edition of ‘Baywatch’ last week – as brutally, succintly, and hilariously as any other issue:

Rep. Duncan Hunter reads off the the “20th Hijacker”‘s Sunday menu: a whole-wheat pita, brown long-grain rice, canned peaches, steamed asparagus, northern beans, tea, and margarine (is there an Atkins plan for this?). Hunter even went as far as to bring in an actual plate of the food to show. If there was any sort of sass from the audience, Hunter liked to harp on the fact that the prisoners also recieved two kinds of fruit. Two, dammit! “We are blameless! We have given them two types of fruit!” Stewart cries, holding out his arms. “Although it should be noted that according to a memo signed by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, the US Military does consider dingleberries a type of fruit”

    Oh, right.

“The issue really is largely, speaking as I understand it, he was treated well there. He says he was fed every day, and as such to turn around and use that kind of language I think is just insensitive.”

Now who could have said that, and about who, I wonder.

Ooh Ooh, Mr Kotter, I know, I know!

    Do I win a prize?

Yes, Rob, the incident does raise a few questions over the continuing suitability of Jaspan to be in charge of an Australian media enterprise. Further, the shareholders of Fairfax might wonder if their interests are really served by The Age being dragged to the left of Chomsky.

But my point was fairly straightforward. How can you turn to Fairfax to pick up on the can’t-make-this-stuff-up irony of food somehow ameliorating the ‘injustice’ of detention at Gitmo, while ignoring the egregious comments of the same organisation’s hotshot import from Scotland?

Apparently the latest torture at Gitmo consists of reading Harry Potter books aloud to the inmates.

Is this more inhumane than playing Christina Aguilera records? Discuss.

By doing the same thing anyone does reading Fairfax papers, Al, skipping over the bilge, the fluff, the polyfiller and the wastes-of-space, ignoring the ridiculous editorials written by drunken incompetent reject baby boomers, and heading straight for the offbeat news, the crossword, and sudoku.

As a food blogger, the dinners I make quite exceptional, but wonder if chaining my guests in a foetal position for a day would make them in any way less humane?

    Inquiring minds need to know.

    Unique.

    Definitely unique.

Getting urinated on while munching that ginger chicken would be quite the experience.

Probably enjoy it all the more after a healthy bout of sleep deprivation too. Can’t wait. While the tasteless yanks are at it, how about follow up publications “Pol pot’s ten favourite songs to hum while you dig” and “Orange thumbs: fun with ex-army exfoliants.”
